CCV filter 6.7 Powerstroke location, replacement, and maintenance guide from Bullet Proof Diesel.

Understanding the Crankcase Ventilation Oil Separator Assembly in Your 6.7L Ford Powerstroke Engine

The 6.7L Ford Powerstroke is known for its impressive towing power, durability, and efficiency in Ford Super Duty trucks. But like all diesel engines, it depends on key components to manage emissions and protect engine health. One of the most important yet overlooked parts is the CCV filter, also known as the crankcase ventilation oil separator assembly.

At Bullet Proof Diesel, we know that neglecting the CCV filter can lead to excessive oil consumption, clogged turbos, engine oil leaks and premature engine wear. This guide will explain what the CCV filter does, when to replace it, how to change it, and where to find it on your truck.

What Is a CCV Filter on a 6.7 Powerstroke?

The CCV filter (Crankcase Ventilation Filter) separates oil mist from blow-by gases that escape past the piston rings during combustion. With the combustion chamber pressures in most modern diesel engines, this escaping gas is extremely common and if not handled properly can cause an excess in crankcase pressure.  Instead of venting these oily gases to the atmosphere, the CCV system routes them back into the intake to meet emissions standards.

The CCV filter removes oil droplets from these gases before they’re recirculated, preventing oil from fouling your intake manifold, intercooler, and turbo. The separated oil drains back to the crankcase, while cleaned gases are fed into the intake. This system helps reduce emissions, minimize oil loss, helps prevent engine oil leaks and maintain engine performance.

The CCV filter is part of the crankcase ventilation oil separator assembly, which sits inside a plastic housing on top of the valve cover. Replacing the CCV filter when recommended is crucial for protecting your turbo and intake system from oil buildup.

Where Is the CCV Filter on a 6.7 Powerstroke?

The CCV filter on the 6.7L Powerstroke is located on the top of the engine, integrated into the black plastic cover over the valve cover:

2011–2019 models: The filter sits inside the rectangular plastic assembly marked “Oil Separator” or with a Ford part number.

2020+ models: The CCV system design was updated, but the filter remains on top of the valve cover in a similar housing.

To locate it, remove the plastic engine cover (if present) and look for the large plastic assembly on top of the passenger side valve cover, this is the crankcase ventilation oil separator housing containing the CCV filter.

How Often to Change the CCV Filter on a 6.7 Powerstroke

Ford recommends replacing the CCV filter for the 6.7 Powerstroke every 67,500 miles, but this interval can vary depending on driving conditions:

  • Trucks under heavy towing or frequent idling should have the filter inspected or replaced sooner.
  • Excessive oil in intake pipes, blue smoke, or increased oil consumption are signs your CCV filter may be overdue for replacement.
  • Always check your owner’s manual for your specific service interval and follow Ford’s recommendations.

At Bullet Proof Diesel, we’ve seen how keeping up with CCV filter maintenance prevents expensive repairs and keeps your Ford 6.7 Powerstroke performing reliably.

Tips on Replacing the CCV Filter on a 6.7 Powerstroke

Replacing the CCV filter on your 6.7 Powerstroke is a fairly straightforward job for experienced DIYers or professional mechanics. With some basic hand tools and a few hours, this should be a fairly basic install.  Here’s how:

  • Disconnect the battery for safety.
  • It may be necessary to remove the left engine sound shield.
  • Remove the Charge Air Cooler (CAC) intake pipe.
  • It may be necessary to disconnect the fuel filter inlet tube, fuel return quick connect coupling, and fuel filter outlet tube.
  • Cut and remove rubber sleeve at the CCV outlet hose, this will not be reused.
  • Disconnect the CCV outlet hose from the lower intake manifold.
  • Remove the CCV retaining bolts and then remove the CCV from the engine.
  • Reassemble in the opposite of disassembly.
  • Reattach the engine cover and reconnect the battery.

Always inspect the CCV housing and surrounding hoses for cracks or oil residue while you have it apart.  Most of these parts are readily available at Ford dealerships and there are some aftermarket options as well.

Last but not least: Keeping Your 6.7 Powerstroke CCV System Healthy

The CCV filter for the Ford 6.7 Powerstroke is more than just a filter, it's a vital part of keeping your engine, turbo, and emissions systems clean and functioning properly.  It is also critical in preventing external oil leaks because of excess crankcase pressure. Replacing it at recommended intervals prevents oil buildup, reduces emissions, and protects your turbocharger from damage.

Ignoring the CCV filter can result in expensive repairs, poor engine performance, and increased oil consumption. By understanding what the filter does, how to locate it, and how to replace it, you can keep your 6.7L Powerstroke running strong for the long haul.

At Bullet Proof Diesel, we recommend staying on top of CCV filter maintenance and using high-quality replacement parts to protect your engine investment.
